I've Been Selected for the Wheel of Time 2009

Fri Feb 1, 2008, 1:58 PM
Last year, the author of "The Wheel of Time", Robert Jordan, hosted a fan-art calendar contest for the 2009 Wheel of Time Calendar. He was very sick and wanted the proceeds to go towards research into his disease type, amyloidosis. He had no illusions about outliving this precarious disease, and indeed left us in September...

He is greatly and sorely missed, as is the final book for his series entitled "A Memory of Light", which he left unfinished and has since been taken up by his wife and Brandon Sanderson, a prolific fantasy author and friend.

I have the honor of having been selected by a panel of judges and finally by Mr. Jordan himself, just days before he died. I'm not certain (after all the silliness with the publisher) if I can legally display my winning entry, as I believe they now own that image, but I do know they don't own Maya, or my Maya scene file, or any of my massive texture files, or any of that...!

So I thought I'd share with anyone interested two examples of this scene and how it was heading, prior to finalizing the render for the calendar people...

If you've seen them already, nevermind me celebrating! The official winners' list came down through Dragonmount a few days ago, and can be seen here:

Can't wait to see what the other artists came up with!

(Edit) I also just found out they were using my Choedan Kal image from DragonCon's Wheel of Time Booth for the Age of Legends website, ageoflegends.net! A bit of progress, finally...

Hi Jared,

Thank you so much for the :+devwatch: and the :+fav:
I hope you find my stock useful :-)

I really love your photos, especially the range of subject matter.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the 3D rendering process? I generally use as much photo-reference as possible when creating my texture maps in Photoshop and Maya. For example, when I'm creating castle walls, I generally merge or layer up several different brick photos with some raw stone photos to create a high level of realism...

My question for you: is it okay for me to use your stock in this manner? Of course I'd reference you in the images here, but for example, would it bother you if I were to extract some rock textures from one of your photos to layer into my textures for 3D work?

If not, that's fine too; they're your photos. I'm just curious if this would bother you, as I wouldn't be using your stock photos as a whole, necessarily.

The main resource for free textures online is [link], but even though they have many photos there, sometimes I need a different look or feel for my textures.

Please let me know if this is okay with you, and if I'm not making any sense, I'll send you an image to illustrate what I mean?

"I am the Storm."
No I didn't really have any idea of the process you going through in creating your work.
It sounds amazing and very time consuming, I admire you even more now.

Please feel free to use any of my stock you think might be helpful and you don't need to reference me unless it is so obvious it was taken from my image.

So have fun and be creative. I look forward to seeing a lot more of your work. :D
